CALL FOR PAPERS
PAPER PRESENTATIONS

Most parallel sessions at 5th Triple Helix Conference consist of individual paper presentations. In this format, each paper submitted will be assigned a 15-20 minute time slot for the presenter to make an oral presentation of his or her work.

Presenters should prepare a 15 minute oral presentation including time for any overheads, video clips, or other multimedia components they may wish to include. The last few minutes of the time slot should be reserved for questions and discussion. Papers will be scheduled for presentation with other papers submitted in the same topic area (please see the provisional programme).

As mentioned before, two types of papers may be presented:

1) papers based on academic research, which may be either conceptual or empirical:

Conceptual papers should develop strong arguments and new theoretical perspectives on issues related to the Triple Helix concept (i.e. a comprehensive review, support or confrontation of the existing literature to develop a new theoretical perspective).

Empirical papers should instead have a short and focused literature review to develop the research hypotheses, explain the methodology, present the data and their analysis, draw appropriate conclusions and discuss the theoretical and practical implications of the findings.

2) papers based on policy practices or practitioner’s reflections:

These papers should contain a brief narrative section describing the policy or practice presented and explaining its purpose and objective. The presentation section should elaborate on the different issues involved in the implementation of the innovation in question and/or present a case study. The conclusion should contain recommended solutions and/or the outcomes of the study in question.

Submission procedure
In order for your paper to be included in the programme, the book of abstracts or the CD-Rom, at least one of the authors must have registered to the conference (remember that there is a special registration rate until 28 February).

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the submitted material is on time (no extensions will be given) and complies with the submission guidelines (see below). By submitting a contribution, authors acknowledge that the paper is original and not subject to copyright restrictions.

Paper submission guidelines
  • Every paper should have a cover page (not counted in the page count) that includes:
    • The Paper ID (which you received in the notification of acceptance).
    • The paper title (large, bold font, centered)
    • Full name, affiliation and e-mail address of the contact author, centered
    • The other author(s) and their affiliations, centered
    • The topic area and key words
    • A brief abstract of 100-150 words
(This cover page is redundant information. However we would like this extra information to simplify the administrative processing of your paper).

  • Papers should not exceed 30 pages
  • Your papers should be typeset for ISO A4 paper (210cm x 297cm). If you can only print on a different sized paper (e.g. US letter size), please be mindful that we'll be copying it on to A4 paper.
  • You should leave at least a 2.5cm margin (roughly 1 inch) all around the page - i.e. left/right sides, as well as top and bottom.
  • You should use a 12pt font, preferably Times New Roman or Arial. Fonts for embedded code or tables may be varied at your discretion.
  • Internal styles for headings, figures, references etc. within the document are at your own discretion.
  • Papers must be in WORD or PDF format.
  • The paper must be formatted for b/w printers and not color printers. This is especially true for plots and graphs in the paper. Please ensure that the plots are formatted to print out clearly on b/w printers. (It is essential that they print without difficulty on a variety of printers using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Therefore, authors must be sure that any special fonts are included, etc. It is the absolute responsibility of the authors to ensure that their submitted paper will print easily)
  • In order to facilitate the registration of your paper, please name the file as ID_author(s)SURNAME_paper title.doc (or .pdf)
  • The paper must be included as an attachment and emailed to: organization@triplehelix5.com. Your e-mail subject line should be “THC5-full paper submission”.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS
A poster is typically a collection of printed pages or images mounted on poster board, but those with access to large-format printers may prefer to produce a single document. The final poster size should NOT exceed 150 x 100 centimeters (approximately 60 inches x 40 inches).

There will be scheduled sessions in which presenters will be expected to stand by their posters and discuss the work with interested attendees. Presenters may wish to bring printed technical reports or other material to hand out to interested attendees. Presenters are also encouraged to bring their laptop computers, in order to show images, play animations, and run interactive demos

At the conference, presenters are expected to mount their posters for attendees to view. Poster boards, pushpins and other material needed for posting your poster will be provided by the conference organization.

Poster submission procedure:
Although the presentation will be in the form of a poster, the submission itself should be in the form of an extended abstract describing the work.
The abstract should be submitted as a maximum two pages WORD or PDF document and include:
    • The Poster ID (which you received in the notification of acceptance)
    • The poster title (large, bold font, centred)
    • Full name, affiliation and e-mail address of the contact author, centred
    • The other author(s) and their affiliations, centred
    • A brief abstract of up to 500 words The abstract should include a concise description of the idea, the results, supporting imagery and figures, and a discussion of the impact or future directions of the work. Full literature searches are not expected, although a few relevant citations should be included.
Optional Material
Three types of additional material can accompany a Posters submission:
  1. Images that will be displayed on the poster or on the presenter's laptop. These should be uploaded in a commonly viewable format, such as JPEG.
  2. Digital video that will be played on the presenter's laptop. This should be uploaded in a commonly viewable format, such as Quicktime, MPEG, or AVI with common encoding.
  3. The series of slides that will be mounted on the poster, or a mockup of the entire poster. This should be uploaded as a single PDF or PowerPoint file.

Total size of the uploaded material should not exceed 40 Mbytes. See the Submission Procedure Checklist for information on file formats.

Poster submission guidelines
If this is you first poster presentation, please keep in mind that the difference between a poster and a paper presentation is that you should let your poster do most of the “talking'”, i.e. the poster should communicate the essence of your message. Your task will be to answer questions and provide further details, to “drive” the interested attendee through your poster.

Here are some guidelines to help you plan you poster:

  • Keep the material simple. Your poster should cover the KEY POINTS of your work. Make your poster as self-explanatory as possible. This will save you time to use for discussions and questions.
  • The ideal poster is designed to:
    • attract attention
    • provide a brief overview of your work
    • initiate discussion and questions.
  • Make full use of the space, but do not cramp a page full of information as the result can often appear confused.
  • Be concise. Write short sentences and use only pertinent information to convey your message
  • Display your results clearly to attract people who have an interest in your work. Present only those that illustrate the main points of the project.
  • Prepare a few handoutsthat explain the information in more detail.
  • Use colour for highlighting and to make your poster more attractive. Think about what attracts you to posters and other visual displays. Use pictures, diagrams, cartoons, figures, etc., rather than only text wherever possible.
  • Choose background and foreground colour combinations that have high contrast and complement each other. Do not use too many colours. Use preferably the light colour for the background as that is what people are used to seeing.
  • Avoid using more than 2 font types as too many would distract the attention of the attendee, especially when they appear on the same sentence
  • Use fonts that are easy on the eyes, such as Times New Roman or Arial.
  • Use a large font for the title and headings, and label all figures and images.
  • Prepare a short presentation (several minutes) that you can periodically give to those assembled around your poster. Be prepared to give it several times as people move through the area. Plan to spend the entire period of your assigned session at your poster location.
  • Last but not least, If you think you may need certain materials to repair the poster after your travel, bring them with you.
